Today's Hockey Development Programs are very good, however, they can be improved upon. Dan Selin, 54 years old, is a master at skating and has instructed thousands of kids over the past 39 years. During those years, he has coached Boy's AAA, Girl's AA and operated the largest Hockey School in Northern Ontario. Today, Dan continues to instruct and is coach of a Sledge Hockey team.
Based on need, Dan developed a new training method for Hockey Skill Development, known as 'MMSP' - Muscle Memory Skills Patterns. MMSP is the science defined in Hockey Skills Development and is the result of many years of troubleshooting the definition of 'Skill Development'.
There is minimal information and limited resources regarding Hockey Skill Development for kids young to old. There is no Skill Development Plan with an 'A to Z' or a 'Beginning to End' training process for hockey coaches, players, and parents to follow.
Due to the fact that Skills Development has not been fully defined, such beliefs as: a player will develop if he/she 'plays-up' a level, or players need to play as many games as possible, in order to become a Skilled Hockey player, are proven ineffective. Most 'hockey people' know there is very little Skill Development in playing hockey games or playing a 'level-up'. Since there is limited information on how a player becomes skilful, coaches and parents will continue to follow such beliefs. MMSP training paints a clear picture as to how Skill Development is achieved.
Today there exists hundreds of Hockey DVDs, but most of the information is 'drill' or 'system' orientated. As well, today's information is general in nature and does not provide a complete analysis supported by a 'correction process' for player development. This lack of information available is why coaches place a huge emphasis on drills, systems, and playing a lot of hockey games. MMSP will change how coaches, parents, and players view and understand Skill Development.
When Dan Selin started on-ice Coaches Seminars in North Bay, Ontario, it was not long before he realized that most of the coaches did not understand skill development, as well, most coaches could not demonstrate any of the skills (resulting in coaches investing a lot of their practice time in 'drills' and 'systems'). Dan's solution created a Mentorship Program (Ex-Pro and Junior hockey players) to help coaches. When Dan had his mentors in place, he had a difficult time trying to find Skill Development information to support his Mentorship Program. This is what inspired Dan to develop MMSP for hockey.
The Sport of Golf has thousands of DVDs regarding specific Skill Patterns and how they work in unison to play the game, as well as a 'Correction Process' to facilitate development. Hockey needs to do the same.
